Wicca’s Originals @ The Warehouse // October 23rd – November 18th
Kieran plods along the water soaked sidewalk; the wind and rain pelting the thin hoodie covering his back and head. He was used to being uncomfortable. He grew up that way – uncomfortable. Never enough to eat. Cold in the winter. Hot in the summer. Sleeping on the floor. Foster homes aren’t known for their luxurious living conditions.
Up ahead, the neon sign flashes. That’s his sanctuary. Out here, among the ‘normals’, Kieran is a freak. A troublemaker. A nobody. Home is on the other side of that door.
That obnoxious brass bell clangs as he yanks the door open. Heavy metal music blares from the 1980’s boom box that had seen better days. One fluorescent bulb flickers overhead. The smell of stale beer, sweat and cigarettes hangs heavily in the air.
The owner is slouched in one of the two barbershop style chairs; one leg slung over an arm. As always, a cigarette dangles between his thin lips and a chipped coffee cup rests on his thigh. The guy isn’t much of a talker either, so no warm greetings are offered upon Kieran’s arrival.
As he walks to his station, Kieran yanks the hoodie over his head to expose his naked torso. Whatever else he is, his boss is an artist and the tattoos that cover Kieran’s body is a testimony to that fact. He has learned much from his boss’ mastery, but Kieran was an artist in his own right – with piercings. Kieran could pierce anything and his body was his calling card.
The shop may look like a sleazy dive, but the tattoo and piercing equipment was top of the line and more sterile than a hospital operating room. Kieran prepared his tools with practiced meticulousness, because today, he would add one more piercing.
For weeks Kieran planned, designed and hand-crafted this new piece. Without even a flinch, Kieran applied the needle with surgical precision. No need for numbing agents; life had left Kieran immune to physical and mental pain.
With the task complete, Kieran snapped a picture to use in his portfolio. Custom crafted and fitted metal nose guard with fine metal chains that attach to a septum. As he put his tools away, Kieran notices his boss watching him. The barest nod of a head was all Kieran received, but that tiny gesture was high praise.
From one artist to another.
