Wicca’s Originals @ The 3rd Annual Interactive Trick-or-Treat Halloween Neighborhood and Carnival // October 15th – November 1st + Interactive sessions on 10/23 and 10/30
Flames exploded straight up into the air, lighting the midnight sky. It did little to alleviate the crisp chill of the October night. The new moon was directly over the small clearing in the woods – a blood moon. The site, high atop a hill, was well hidden from the village down in the valley.
Thirteen stood around the blazing fire. It was the first time in decades our gathering was complete. With times as they were, it was dangerous for the coven to meet in the same place. But tonight was special.
Aura stood apart from the others beneath the gnarled oak that marked her ancestor’s resting place. There was no marker, just the tree to watch over Abigail Miller’s grave. It would have been desecrated centuries ago had the location not be kept secret. Her remains were that powerful.
The power was strong in Aura’s family and she was no exception. With a touch of her hand, Aura could crumble a boulder into dust or plant a seed and with in seconds a bountiful apple tree grew from the ground. All power is not good, nor evil – it is how it is used that makes it so.
Chanting, low and hypnotic, floated through the darkness. The ceremony has begun. Aura placed her hand on the trunk of the ancient tree and felt Abigail’s energy pass into her soul. Abigail apparently approved of tonight’s ceremony.
After a silent pray for strength and wisdom, Aura pulled the mask down over her face; Abigail’s mask. Fabled to be fashioned from human skin and hair, the mask was nothing more than softened leather, though strands of Abigail’s hair was woven into the heavy threads that bordered the edges.
Aura pulled the hood of her heavy blood-red cloak over her head and walked slowly toward the fire. The coven, dressed in heavy black robes, stood around the bonfire, waiting for Aura to complete the circle. Tonight was her first act as their leader.
When Aura stepped into position the fire flared again and danced with an eerie glee. The chanting grew more urgent as Aura raised her hand toward the fire and a flame caressed her hand as a pet would nuzzle its beloved master.
Down in the valley, the village below was cursed. Plague, famine, pestilence – it touched every man, woman, child and creature. Tonight, that would end. As Aura’s energy flowed into the ground, the land became fertile again. Sickness was pulled from every living creature and fed to the flames. When the sun rose, the curse would be extinguished.
All power is not good, nor evil – it is how it is used that makes it so.
