Wicca’s Originals @ CyberPunk Fair // May 14th – June 4th

Wicca’s Originals has done it again, merging cutting edge cybertech engineering with the fashion world with the introduction of the Neuron Boots.

These boots have been made sporting either a Latex of Leather exterior material, with high contrast decorative bands, but that’s just what is seen on the outside.

On the inside, these boots are equipped with predictive, powered gyro-stabilizers and assisted power stepping which make it easy to run or sprint or perform other acrobatic or athletic tricks, even despite the high heel.

The platform itself is filled with a compressible smartgel, capable of absorbing impacts such as jumping from a rooftop or balcony.

Why settle for sacrificing mobility in the name of looking good, when you can get both with the Neuron Boots?

Strip Away The Layers

The closer she looked, the more the colors blurred. Dull, lifeless, common. Nothing to write home about, if she actually had someone to write to. It was a minor piece by an insignificant artist, who led an unremarkable life. Just like me, Naia thought to herself.

With a heavy sigh, Naia pulled off the magnified glasses she used to resort paintings at the Metropolitan Museum and tossed them on her worktable. The throbbing behind her eyes was there when she woke up that morning and nothing; shower, food or coffee, eased her discomfort. Considering the shower was lukewarm at best, the food bland and the coffee weak, it’s not like there was much hope.

For seven years, two as an unpaid intern, Naia worked in the cold, temperature controlled basement of the museum for long hours and low pay. Her clothes were from the bargain racks at the local Goodwill. Long skirts down to her ankles, and oversized, shapeless sweaters; all meant to hide her body. She might be 26 years old, but Naia looked as old as the other two basement dwellers who worked nearby; both close to retirement age.

After rubbing her eyes with the heels of her hands, Naia looked up at the clocked and noticed it was after six; time to go home. Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones, heaven help her, those were their actual names, had already shuffled out, leaving Naia alone. No hellos. No goodbyes. No conversation day in and day out. It was like working in a morgue with walking corpses.

Naia gathered her belongs and made her way out of the museum. She arrived at the bus stop in time to see the 6:15 chug away down the street. With her bag clutched tightly to her stomach, Naia sat gingerly on the edge of the bench and waited for the next bus. What else could she do, but wait.

Two hour later, Naia walked the final block to her tiny efficiency apartment with a bag containing two soggy tacos and a warm soda from the whole-in-the-wall place around the corner. Just like work, she lived in the basement of a converted brownstone that had seen better days a century ago. As she drew closer, the building manager came out of the front entrance with an overflowing cardboard box. Without fanfare, he dropped the box on top of the trash cans with a grunt of disgust, and then climbed the high stoop as if it were Mt. Everest.

To enter her shabby little space, Naia had to descend a few steps to a door beneath that stoop. As she passed the trash cans, Naia caught sight of a familiar item in the discarded box. Naia reached out and fingered the well worn boots worn by Tillie in 3B. They found Tillie a few days ago when the manager went up to demand she turn down the music blasting from her crappy stereo, dressed in just her underwear and the needle still in her arm. Bet that stereo is now in the manager’s apartment.

Looking around to see if anyone was watching, Naia grabbed the box and hurried down to her apartment. Once safely inside, Naia dropped the forgotten food onto an old, scarred table and carried the box to her bed; which was no more than a thin mattress on top of a wooden pallet. The single room contained a toilet, shower (without any walls), sink and a tiny closet. No kitchen – only a hotplate on top of a small chest of drawers.

One by one, Naia emptied the contents of the box on to the mattress. A couple short skirts, a tank top, a black button down blouse, a red pullover blouse and a thin black sweater. All that remained were the thigh high boots and what looked like a child’s diary.
Naia stripped down to her underwear and dropped back down on to her bed. As if driven by a force unknown, Naia slipped into the boots. A little snug around the toes, but otherwise the leather hugged Naia’s legs like they were made just for her. Naia couldn’t help but stare at her legs like they were a new, strange creature she had never seen. And she couldn’t help but wonder about the woman who wore them.

With the diary in hand, Naia scooted back on the bed until her back rested against the wall; only a thin pillow to protect her skin against the rough, exposed brick. She turned on the small lamp that sat on the floor and worked the clasped open on the small book.

At the beginning, the diary was filled with girlish hopes and dreams. Pretty dresses. Parties. A puppy. As a teenager, Tillie dreamed of becoming a singer. Loved. Adored. Famous. Soon after that the entries turned dark. Names of men. What they made her do. What they paid her. How they hurt her. The last entries were nothing more than incomprehensible ramblings and unreadable scrawls.

Naia didn’t realize she was crying until her salty tears fell on the last page. She looked around the place she called home and her stomach turned. Her life could be reduced to a cardboard box carelessly thrown onto a trash can. With gentle hands, Naia carefully removed the boots as if they were fragile and costly and returned them to the box. Each piece of clothing, neatly folded, was returned to the box. Last, the diary was laid on top with respect, as though Naia was placing flowers upon Tillie’s grave.

Staring down at the carton that now rested beside her dresser, Naia was determined not to meet the same fate. For the first time in her life, Naia wanted to fight for something. She was ready to fight for a new and better life.
Naia no longer wanted to just exist. She wanted to live.

Bright Lights, Cyber Nights

Long, boot clad legs stretch out of the limousine door. Lights flash as cameras click away to get the first pictures of the rising new star of the blockbuster movie, Cyber Nights.

A delicate hand reaches out and the driver quickly takes it. With the grace of a predatory cat, the woman slowly rises from the car as though the world awaits her arrival. And it does.

Fans scream her name as journalists and bloggers shout out questions about the movie and her life. Lips curve into a Cheshire cat smile as Cybil simply gives them all a princess wave before moving toward the theater hosting the movie’s premier.

Dressed in vibrant pink from head to toe, looking like she stepped off the theater screen of the futuristic movie, Cybil pauses as the paparazzi get their fill of photos. With pale pink hair in a bob cut and a wide, opaque silver visor, all that can be seen of her face is a pert nose and bright pink lips.

The shimmering holo-pink bodysuit barely covers her voluptuous curves, where her leather wedge boots cover her legs all the way up to her ass cheeks. Pink and silver gloves cover her milky white skin all the way to the shoulder. Cybil is a vision of the picture perfect cyber heroine she portrays in the film.

Half way down the fuchsia carpet, no red carpet for this rising star, Cybil stops to sign autographs for a group a tween girls who have all adopted her many different looks from the movie. Before Cybil heads into the theater, she invites the girls to pose with her for some pictures.

Safely inside, Cybil does a quiet televised interview for a popular entertainment news network before she is escorted to her theater seat. She dutifully sits through the film, even though she has seen it in a private screening at the studio.
Hours later and several wardrobe changes later to make sure no one followed her home, Cybil disappears into the Hollywood lights.

With the flash and fantasy gone, the woman beneath the hype wearily opens the door to a modest one bedroom loft. Once the world is locked away behind a steel door and several deadbolt locks, Anne pulls off the hoodie and baseball cap and breaths a sigh of relief. Old, worn sneakers are toed off at the door and she pads barefoot to the kitchen for a soda.

Gone is the Hollywood darling. All that is left is a fresh-faced, quiet woman people ignore when they pass her by. Unremarkable looks, unremarkable childhood, unremarkable life. No one thinks twice about Anne. Cybil is the superstar.

Armed with a soda and a bag of potato chips, Anne settles down on her overstuffed sofa with a warm blanket and her lazy calico cat, Patches. With only the streetlights shining through the windows, Ann sits in her darkened apartment to watch her favorite movie.

A sense of peace and contentment washes over Anne as the credits roll across the screen. Bette Davis, now there is a star!

The lights outside Pyper’s window were bright, almost too bright, They glared throughout the city, illuminated every building as far as the eye could see. Yet beyond, there was only darkness.

Such is the way of space. Light and dark battling for dominance. A station floating among the stars as a refuge: a beacon for intergalactic travelers from the cold darkness of space. To Pyper, it was simply home.

Pyper held the notable distinction of being the first human born on this station, thanks to the fact that her parents were among the first to build this new colony. As word spread, other species arrived, as well as human explorers and settlers.

That was over 50 years ago, based on the Earth calender and the only home Pyper ever knew. When she came into adulthood, Pyper could have boarded a ship and traveled throughout known space or explored beyond. She was well educated, thanks to her parents and highly skilled in engineering, physics and biochemistry. Instead, Pyper chose to remain and follow in the family business. Her parents worked hard all their lives, sometimes at great risk to their own safety and sanity, to see this dream realized. A neutral platform where races across the galaxy could meet and work together.

Dressed in a synthetic, leather-like jumpsuit that stored body heat and reduced the need for room-by-room heating units, Pyper finished dressing as she continued to stare out the windows. While all her wardrobe was standard for the residents, Pyper did indulge in one luxury – her boots.

While they were constructed by the same materials as her clothing, Pyper had them custom made to include platformed wedge to the sole that not only elevated her height, but gave her a feeling of personal power. Her mother once referred to them as ‘ass kicking heels’. Whatever they were called back on Earth, Pyper wore them with more than a bit of attitude.

Seeing time grew short, Pyper gathered the last of her things and left her quarters. The tram system platform that transported residents everywhere in the city was across from her building.

Within minutes Pyper arrived at work. She had taken over for her father after his death at 173 Earth years. Why is it the good die so young?

The doors opened automatically as Pyper approached so she never had to break her stride. Confident, brilliant, fierce, fair-minded – all adjectives used to describe Pyper Inshan when she assumed her father’s duties.

“Good morning, Ambassador Inshan,” Pyper’s aide greeted her with respectful bow, “The Kherillion delegation awaits you in the Great Hall.“

Pierce Pressure

“You have to do it, Yhesy! Everyone at school has the piercing.”
Jessie may be my bestie, but at times like this her whiny pleas can really grate on my last nerve. She is the one from the good family and she’s the one pressuring me to bow to peer pressure. Go figure.

It’s Friday afternoon and a half school day, otherwise I would not have let Jessie drag me downtown to a questionable looking tattoo parlor. She’s the one who brought me here. I live not far from here, but even I have never been to this area. Go figure.

It’s not like I am a prude or a snob. My wardrobe runs to the punk/goth side, where Jessie is the preppie cheerleader. I doubt Jessie has ever been downtown in her life, since her family has a huge house on the upper east side. Go figure.

People look at us and whisper that I am the bad influence because I dress differently and my naturally blond hair has dark purple streaks. I am the one getting straight A’s in school and tutoring Jessie in nearly every class so she doesn’t flunk out. Go figure.

Now it is Jessie who is nervous as her fingernails dig into my arm when we walk into the ship. Despite the questionable neighborhood, the shop is clean, well lit and organized. The two guys inside exchange a look as we walk in. I can just imagine what they are thinking about this odd couple. Go figure.

“How can we help you, ladies,” the guy at the far end of the shop asks. He is shirtless and has the most amazing tattoos, but it’s his piercings that have my attention. Though I may still be considered jail bait at 17, I can appreciate a good looking guy a couple years older. Go figure.

“My … my … my friend wants her ear pierced,” Jessie stutters. Yes, the cheerleaders of Walt Whitman High School think more than one ear piercing is edgy and why they all have one extra piercing; all filled with a shiny and expensive diamond stud. Go figure.

The guy closer to the door barks out a laugh while the hottie just shakes his head and leans back in his chair. “That’s what mall jewelry shops are for, little girl. Besides, I don’t work on underage kids. It’s the law.”

“I’m 18,” I say as I step closer, “and I want that piercing.” I point to a picture on the wall of a three spike piercing along the length of a nose. I have secretly longed for such a piercing, but would never admit it out loud. Took Jessie’s whining to join the ‘in crowd’ to take the next step. Go figure.

I hand the guy my driver’s while I continue to stare at the piercing with longing. I ignore Jessie’s whispered protests in my ear and the tug on my arm to move me toward the door. Sure, she wanted me to follow the latest trend, but never expected me to take her ‘pierce pressure’ to a completely different level. Go figure.

“This says your 17, sweetheart,” Mr. McHottie says as he hands back my I.D. I also notice he gives me a very thorough appraisal from head-to-toe that makes me tingle all over. I did a little looking of my own and noticed the advanced online college course on his laptop. Sexy and smart all rolled up in a yummy looking package in a out of the way tattoo place. Go figure.

“My birthday is Sunday,” I admit as I put my I.D. in my pocket. “What’s a day or two? I am here now.”

“A day or two is the difference between my loosing my license and not, sweetheart. If you still want the piercing, come back on Sunday and I will do it for free. We’ll call it a birthday present.”

“I’ll be here Sunday,” I say with confidence and a quirk of a smile. “And my name is Yhesy, sweetheart.” Maybe Jessie’s little push turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Free piercing and another look at hotstuff in tight jeans. Go figure.

“Mine’s Kieran,” he say as he holds out is hand to me. As I take it, I feel the electricity pass between us. Oh, yes, this will be a very memorable 18th birthday.

Go figure.

What To Wear? What To Wear?

It’s another bright, new day in Hornet City. Well, maybe bright, if it weren’t for the heavy layer of smog that hung over the city like a shroud. Decade after decade of mechanisms spewing caustic smoke into the air and everything is permanently marked with soot and smut.

Despite all the pollution, life goes on. After a decontamination shower, since water is affordable only by the uber wealthy, I stand on the reclaimator. Natural resources are long gone, so reclaimators were created to recycle and reuse old items.

What shall I wear today?

Hair – bright red with a black streak, pulled into a ponytail.
Eyes – metallic gold with extended vision capabilities.
Outfit – typical black jumpsuit of the worker class.
Footwear – typical black boots of the worker class.

Ah, but what is this? Something new on the menu! It must be the bonus I was promised for exceeding my monthly production quota. An upgrade!

As instructed, I insert my hands deep into the open slots in the wall. Suddenly my arms are engulfed in a steel cage and I am unable to move away. The sharp pain lasts only seconds, but it is enough to make me dizzy.

I do not know how long I am trapped in the reclaimator’s unrelenting grip when the machine finally beeps three times and releases its hold.

Trembling, I pull my arms free and find my hands and forearms gone and replaced by mechanicals. Cables, pistons and gears move with precision as I flex long, metal fingers. Only my palms are covered by wrapped leather pieces.

The caps on my fingertips appear hinged and an odd button is on the inside of both wrists. When pressed, the fingertip caps flip back and long, sharp metal claws extend out of my fingers another two inches.

My eyes gleam with excitement as I admire my new upgrade.

“Wicked.”

Finding Your Inner Self – Part 2

It’s been almost three months since Erin found that first note in her lunch bag. Since then, one appeared each week. The notes made no threats of a public exposure over the racy book that was placed in among her more sedate reading selections. Quite the opposite. The notes implied that Erin might enjoy many aspects of her hidden book.

Erin tried to catch the culprit, stalker, secret admirer; she wasn’t even sure what label to use. Unfortunately, the entrance to the employee breakroom was not monitored and too far from her desk at the entrance to the museum to see who lingered in that area. And with each new note, Erin’s curiosity and interest grew.

Evelyn, the museum’s secretary, approached the reception desk signaling Erin’s lunch break. It took all of Erin’s self control to remain calm and not run to the breakroom. As always, Erin had the room to herself. With her breath held, Erin rushed in and snatched her lunch from the fridge. Without ceremony, Erin dumped the contents. She didn’t care about the food, it was her weekly note she needed more than sustenance.

Nothing. It was Friday and so far, no note made an appearance inside her lunch and for some reason Erin could not explain, this made her sad. Each week, Erin looked forward to a new note with growing anticipation. They made her feel … noticed. They made her feel … wanted. Now, she felt empty.

When had it happened? When was the exact moment her life ceased its boring, mundane drudgery and light began to seep into the tiny cracks those notes opened in Erin’s protective wall? It was Friday, so the brown bag should hold a tuna sandwich. Instead, ham and cheese on rye with mustard, a bag of chips and an orange awaited her. No longer was she held hostage by the habits of her past.

Even her appearance changed. When once Erin wore her mousy brown hair in a tight bun, the style had softened and, even a few times was worn unbound and loose around her shoulders. The buttons at the throat of her blouses were now left undone. Bland old Erin slipped away when those notes began to appear and a new Erin slowly emerged.

Co-workers took notice and often stopped by the reception desk to chat for a few minutes. The first time she was invited out to lunch with a few of the docents, Erin was speechless. Now, it happened several times a week. Erin was even invited to join a large group after work to celebrate a birthday.

But now, the missing note left Erin’s chest tight and tears welled up in her eyes. She mentally scolded herself for putting so much stock in a few anonymous messages. The breakroom suddenly felt very stifling, so Erin gathered her food, purchased a bottle of water from a vending machine and headed outside. Another change made in her life.

Outside a group of co-workers waved Erin over to join them. The people were friendly and the conversation was light-hearted, but Erin’s heart was still heavy. By the time the day was over, Erin was ready to crawl into to bed and stay there for the entire weekend.

The bus ride home was bland and uneventful. The four block walk from the bus stop to her apartment seemed to drag on for miles. Three flights of stairs felt like a mountain trek. All that was left was a walk down a long hallway and Erin would be home. Home and a good cry is what she needed. Erin fished her keys out of her purse and looked down the hall and stepped dead in her tracks.

Leaning against her apartment door was a large white box wrapped with a bright red ribbon. Not knowing what awaited her, Erin took slow, hesitant steps forward. The card affixed to the box read simply ‘Erin’. Once her door was unlocked, Erin picked up the large, long box and carried it inside to her bedroom. Erin’s hand shook as she pulled the note from its envelope.

“I had this made especially for you. As lovely as it is, it does not compare to your beauty, sweet Erin.”
Well now. This was a change from notes in a lunch bag.

Erin tugged the ribbon loose and carefully lifted the lid of the box. Beneath layers of white tissue rested several articles of clothing Erin immediately recognized. They were described in great detail in the book that made its way into her possession. A sleeveless bolero jacket and matching leather corset lay on either side of a metal bra and panty set.

Each article of clothing was carefully lifted from the tissue nest and placed on Erin’s bed. The leather was soft and supple and obviously handcrafted. The metal lingerie looked as if it was molded to the curves of a woman’s body. Though the metal was cool to the touch, Erin’s body heated at the idea of it against her skin.

The curtains over the single bedroom window were pulled tightly closed, but Erin rushed over to check again. Her head swam with excitement over what she planned to do next. In the bathroom, Erin removed every stitch of clothing, taking great care to avoid the mirror. Never brave about nudity, Erin bundled up in her old flannel robe before returning to the bedroom.

As she walked toward the bed Erin realized the gift box was deeper than necessary for the items she removed. After pulling out the multiple layers of tissues Erin gasped at what she found buried beneath – tall, matching leather boots. Just looking at those boots made Erin ache with need. Now more than ever, she was determined to try everything on.

One by one, Erin put each piece on and was amazed to find each a perfect fit. The leather was snug, but not restrictive. The metal appeared cast just for her alone. If it were possible, the outfit made Erin feel truly alive for the first time in her bland and boring life.

Never one to look at herself in a mirror, now it seemed to call to Erin. There was a tall mirror mounted on the inside of her closet, which Erin normally kept covered, but now was the time to take a good, long look at herself. Like pulling the bandage from the skin, Erin yanked away the sheet that covered the mirror and let out an audible yelp.

The woman in the reflection was, well, she was … beautiful. Sexy. A stranger, so unlike the Erin everyone saw each day. Her hair was loose around her shoulders and had a tousled look and her eyes had a wild gleam that almost frightened Erin.

Did the clothing possess the power to change her personality? Or did it just bring out what was there all along. The light hidden deep beneath the dull, gray exterior.
Erin didn’t know how long she stood in front of that mirror before a knock on door startled her out of the trance. She hastily donned her bathrobe and wrapped it tight around her body. Suddenly shy and embarrassed again, Erin would be mortified if anyone saw her dressed this way.

Other than the landlord, no one has ever visited Erin’s apartment, so when she looked out the peephole, Erin’s confusion only deepened. What was he doing outside her apartment?
Leaving the security chain on, Erin unlocked the three deadbolts and opened the door just a crack. Erin peered around the edge of the door to find the tall man smiling back at her. His eyes darkened and took on a flash that made Erin tingle all over.
He leaned forward and whispered through the crack in the door, “I know you are wearing my gift.”

Erin’s eyes grew so big she was sure they would pop from her head and the blush that heated her face had to travel all the way to her toes.
“You,” was all Erin managed to squeak. Not full conscious of what she was doing, Erin released the chain and opened the door to admit him.

He entered the apartment, his eyes never straying from Erin’s face. Erin closed and locked the door again, all the while still clutching the robe tightly closed. She could feel his gaze and it made her scared and excited all at the same time. Then, something inside her just … broke. A wall crumbled. The bland, lifeless lump melted away and a new Erin rose from the ashes.

No longer afraid, Erin left the robe drop to the floor. She watched a slow, knowing smile appear on his handsome face.
“Beautiful,” he said in a deep, husky voice.
Yet, his eyes never left her face.

Finding Your Inner Self – Part 1

It’s Thursday, so it must be egg salad.
Yes, Erin was that predictable. And that boring. She led a small life in a big city. Just an insignificant speck among a million souls. That mousy girl that people forget was there. And not foolish enough to believe she would aspire to be anything more.

Just like every other day, Erin was alone in the employee breakroom of the museum where she worked. It was a beautiful summer day and everyone else had gone out for lunch. Everyone except plain, old Erin. No one thinks of asking her to go along.

So Erin grabbed her brown paper bag lunch from the fridge, poured a cup of stale coffee and took her usual seat at a table in the corner. For a moment she stared at the brown bag on the table and wished it contained something different, but knew it is the same thing, as it has been every Thursday since Erin was 5 years old.

Monday was chicken, left over from Sunday supper. Tuesday was peanut butter. Wednesday was bologna with butter on white bread. Thursday was egg salad. Friday was tuna (like a good Catholic). Sandwiches were always cut in four perfect little squares. Ten neatly cut carrot sticks; not eight, nor eleven, but ten. One small apple. One thin, white napkin. Like mother, like daughter.

The only child of a librarian and a housewife, Erin’s child was as exciting as white bread. Even her dreams were boring; limited to the safe and bland books her father brought home from the library each week. Yes, safe and bland books for a safe and bland girl.

Now in her early 30’s and all alone since her parents were both gone, Erin lived in a bland little apartment, not even a cat or canary for company. With a sigh, Erin reached for her lunch and shook the contents out onto the table. Out tumbled the egg salad sandwich, carrots, apple, napkin and … a folded piece of paper.

For a moment, Erin was afraid to even touch it, half expecting it to bite her like a snake. Finally, with a rare sense of curiosity, Erin reached for the paper. A gasp escaped her quivering lips as she read the words printed on the sheet. ‘Did you like the book?’

Her face suddenly flushed and Erin’s eyes darted around the room. How did someone find out about … the book? Two months ago, Erin followed her normal Saturday morning routine; bank, library, grocery store and home. Though, when she arrived home, Erin found an extra book in her bag. One she did not check out and wasn’t even a library book. As she began to read it, it was most definitely not a book from the library.

The words Erin read made her face burn, her skin tingle and caused aches in areas of her body she did not know could ache. Erin knew she should put the book down, but no matter how much she squirmed and wiggled on that lumpy old chair of hers, she could not stop reading. When she finally finished, Erin was so embarrassed, she ran to the kitchen and threw the book in the trash. She started to back away, and then fished it from the trash, only to throw it into a junk drawer. She paced nervously around the tiny kitchen for another minute before Erin snatched the book from the drawer and hurried into the living room.

Under the sagging sofa, behind an old, scarred desk, a high shelf in the coat closet – nowhere seems like a good hiding place. Finally, with the book tucked away in a cardboard box, under the shoes she wore only once for her high school graduation, Erin plopped down on the edge of her bed, exhausted.

It was weeks before Erin could finally put that book out of her mind and now this note not only reminded her, but was evidence that someone else knew her embarrassing secret. No longer able to eat, Erin threw everything into the trash. Everything, except the note.

She should tear the note to pieces. Set it on fire. Flush it down the toilet. No, it went into the pocket of her sensible skirt that matched her sensible buttoned up blouse that matched her flat, sensible shoes.

Erin tried to concentrate on her work, but all she could think about was that note in her pocket. Who knew about that book? Who slipped the note into her lunch bag? Was it someone who worked there? Maybe a museum patron? Maybe some crazed lunatic! For the rest of the afternoon, Erin kept looking over her shoulder to see if someone was watching her.

The ride home on the bus was sheer torture and Erin practically ran the four blocks from the bus stop to her apartment. For the rest of the night, Erin sat on the sofa with her arms wrapped around legs and methodically chewed her fingernails down to stubs.

What was she going to do?

To be continued …
